眼下正值毕业季（graduation season），我们来聊聊跟“毕业”有关的那些英文表达吧~

 

　　学位服 cap and gown

 

　　学位服（academic dress/ costume）一般就称为cap /kæp/ and gown /gaʊn/，即学位帽和学位袍。

 

　　其实学位服还有个部分叫 hood（兜帽，坎肩），就是披在背后的那个垂布。

 

　　学位帽最常用的叫法是 cap，又叫 square academic cap，graduate cap。

 

　　不过，“学位帽”还有个有趣的说法：“托泥板”，mortarboard /'mɔ：təbɔ：d/。

 

　　好吧，确实有点像……

 

　　毕业典礼 commencement/ graduation ceremony

 

　　英式英语里，毕业典礼一般叫 graduation ceremony，毕业那天则是 graduation day。

 

　　而在美国，毕业典礼则通常被称作 commencement ceremony，毕业那天除了叫 graduation day，也可以叫 commencement day。

　　拨穗 turning of the tassel

 

　　cap 上那个穗穗就叫 tassel /'tæs（ə）l/ ，流苏 。

 

　　通常是校长或系主任，会为每个 degree candidate（学位候选人）turn the tassel（拨穗），象征着 transition from candidate to graduate。

 

　　正确的拨穗姿势，是从右到左，所以上台接受拨穗礼之前，记得把穗穗先拨到右边。

　　毕业照 graduation photo

　　►英式英语里，本科和硕士论文都叫 dissertation，博士论文叫thesis；

 

　　►而美式完全反过来，本科和硕士论文叫 thesis，博士论文叫dissertation；

 

　　►paper 可以指课程论文，或某个具体研究在会议或者期刊上发表的论文。如 term paper, course paper, research paper。

 

　　►essay 的含义较广，既可指几千字的短篇论文，也可以指散文或者杂文。
